DJ Empress Supreme is a vibrant free spirited young lady who grew up in the lively streets of Soweto Emndeni South townships of Johannesburg. She relocated to the East side suburbs of Johannesburg, Bezuidenhout “Bez valley. Her educational journey began in East Gate Primary school where she discovered her Artistic skills from as early as grade 3. Soon after that she got accepted by thee prestigious Art schools. National School of Arts in Braamfontein broadened her interest in music, she studied art through out high school and continued her studies in Art, then explored various mediums of art from Fashion to photography then later self taught the art of DJing specifically.
Music has always been part of her upbringing from an early age her father was into soulful sounds she grew up listening to different genres from Afro Jazz blues, from Motown era to new age urban soulful sounds from Baba Bra Hugh Masekela, Miriam Makeba, Ibrahim Adbul to Fela Kuti, Frank Sinatra, Billie Holiday, Nina Simone, Brenda Fassie, Chico Twala, Ntate Sipho Hotstix Mabuse, Baba Mahlathini Tembe to the Legendary Lady Smith Black Mambazo. Her father listened to different genres including her favourite Reggae music.
At the ageof 9 her older cooler cousin introduced her to a different edgy vibrant eccentric sound, head bobbing type of sounds, she was highly intrigued since then it was love at first sight, this type of sound she could relate to as an African black child. He introduced to her various brilliant young gifted mc’s from Notorious BIG, to Tupac Amaru Shakur, The Lox, Big Pun, Mc Lyte, Naughty by Nature, The Fugees, Ice cube, N.W.A, ONYX, Wu Tang Clan, Run DMC, Public enemy, Flip Mode Squad, Dela Soul just to name a few. She fell in love with the whole Hip-Hop culture from the lyrical content to dress codes and other elements that were involved.
She then started hanging around Hip Hoppers, like minded people, that’s when she gained more knowledge about the culture, she then learnt about the different Hip-Hop vast elements, attending ever mind blowing sessions with friends, then it was the ever crowded ciphers in Jo’burg’s Ghandi Square back in high school, to different Rap joints around the City of Gold, such as Le Club, Horror Cafe to Slughuis in Soweto then Black Sundays which lead to the artistic side of the culture that’s when she discovered the love of the street art form, Graffiti, Photography and Fashion Designing. Through these great sessions she met the most amazing talented people who inspired her further
From Hip hop then she discovered the djing side, then later on started experimenting with Reggae
at a friends place, she started playing around with different sounds from neo soul to Dupstep then Reggae dance hall and Hip hop, she then started organising her own events and later joined the team of David Krut, her mentor. David Krut a well respected Publisher/Artist. Who owns different art projects spaces all around the world, at David Krut Projects she acquired different skills from Photography, Photo Editing, Printmaking, Graphic Designing, Web Designing to Video Editing, Sketching to Managing Art Spaces at David Krut she got to work with world known artists such as William Kentridge, David koloane, Sam Hlengethwa, Aida Maluneh and many more well respected artists. Since then she has played at the African Unite Reggae Fastival, Catch a Fire Festival, Women in Reggae Festival, Clarks Block Party, International Reggae Day. She plays in one of the Biggest Sounds in SA (Boom Sound King Roots Intl) where she has had a great opportunity to live stream the entire month of Women’s Month, representing all the Woman in Reggae around SA and the rest of the African continent and world.
