Rising Afrikaans Dancehall Artist Muscavado Gully

Muscavado Gully has just released a single titled On My Way Up. which he co-produced with Lazer for South Music Records. Inspired by the growing number of fans from his local community who have been encouraging him and telling him that he is on his way out of the ghetto despite the hard conditions that they live in. He is seen as a beacon of hope.

Muscavado is part of the growing Afrikaans Dancehall movement that has been baptised as Afrikaanshall. “It’s part of my identity and my roots,” explains Muscavado, ” The reason I started to do Afrikaans music is because most of my people do not understand English, let alone Patwa. So in order to get my message across, I had to sing in Afrikaans, which is the language that my people relate to.” His message was received well, because now, the community believes in him and that he is on his way up.

Sherman Daniels, better known by his stage name Muscovado Gully, is a reggae and dancehall artist hailing from Cape Town, South Africa. Raised in the town of Strand in the Western Cape, Muscovado Gully grew up immersed in the sounds of legendary reggae icons like Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, Lucky Dube, and Burning Spear during the 90s. In the early 2000s, he discovered contemporary Jamaican artists such as Mavado and Vybz Kartel, whose music deeply resonated with him. Growing up amidst poverty and the challenges of life in Cape Town’s streets, Muscovado Gully channels his experiences into his music, creating anthems of strength, motivation, and resilience for the youth of the ghetto. Inspired especially by the legendary Jamaican singer Mavado, whose lyrics speak candidly about poverty, gang violence, and peace, Muscovado Gully connects deeply with themes of struggle and hope, aiming to uplift and empower his community through his art.
