Cape Town Reggae SunSplash replaces Monwabisi Beach Reggae Sunsplash

The embattled annual Monwabisi Beach Reggae Legends Sunsplash will not take place this year, instead the Cape Town Reggae Splash will take its place. The annual Monwabisi Beach Reggae Sunsplash was cancelled apparently because of confusion as one of the Organisers casually stated in a response to a Facebook comment: “there was too much confusion, we do it next year” No official word from the previous Organisers.

When it was definite that Monwabisi Beach Reggae Sunsplash was cancelled, Reggae Afrika Sound System stepped in to save the Heritage Rastafari Family Gathering which has been taking place for over a decade, in Khayelitsha. The first step was to completely change the name with its historical bearings. They felt that rebranding of the event will help to get a better venue and create new trust in the Reggae Movement in Cape Town and hopefully some decent funding to put together a quality show.

The new organizers got the nod from the Paran Arts and Culture Association who have been at the inception of the Monwabisi Reggae Sunsplash. They set off to find a new venue which is a private farm 10 minutes away from Monwabisi. The Farm has limited capacity and they recommend booking in advance. The festival hopes to keep the same ethos of the Monwabisi Splash, which was a strong family day gathering with Reggae Music and Rastafari culture presented through live music, arts and crafts market and activities for the kiddies.

The line-up has a strong local flavor and less international acts, bringing forth the best of what the Cape has to offer. The confirmed acts are: Sons of Selassie, Tiggy Tafari (UK) Wiseman’s Doctrine, Heart and Soul, Ras Teba, Crosby, Jah Lion, Daddy Spencer and Reggae Afrika Soundsystem with more acts to be announced.

The Cape Town Reggae Sunsplash will take place on 1 December 2019 at a Private Farm Maccassar, 10 minutes from Monwabisi. Gates will open at 7am and the activities will commence from 10am – 10pm. Admission fee is R100.00 Adults and a discounted price of R50.00 for Kids under 18.
