Faya Uman became prominent in the local reggae-dancehall scene after the release of her first project, ‘Musical Chairs’, which featured well known songs such as ‘uMthunzi’ and ‘Lose control’. Although most of her previous songs could be categorized as reggae – what is striking about them is the heavy influence of others genres in her music and how that resulted in her work appealing not only to fans of reggae music, but music lovers in general. Faya Uman has decided to further explore this versatility on her upcoming album. ‘From the onset of my career, I’ve said that my work is the culmination of all my musical influences and that it cannot be confined or restricted to one music category. ‘Elements of Faya’ is a project that will feature music of various genres (or ‘elements’) that have made me ‘Faya’, she said. Faya Uman believes that when music is being evaluated it is the content that is of greater significance than the musical genre, this is her reason for hosting a show that features performers of different kinds that are all unified by the potency of the content in their music. ‘SABELA’ means ‘heed the call’, which in this instance is a call to an evening of word, sound and power.
