Dub Master Steve Netshishivhe New Album – Tribulation and Dub

Tribulation and Dub – New Album from Dub Master Steve Netshishivhe

Steve Netshishivhe, affectionately called the Dub Master by his peers and followers delivers his sixth studio dub album, Tribulation and Dub. The Album saw its official release on Friday 26, February 2021 on the 9111 Media House Label across all digital platforms.

The first single from the album, Khonani Vhukuma, dropped earlier in the year and garnered critical response which did quite a stellar job of anticipating the album. It has been exactly a year since his last Album Greediness of Dub and Otherwise dropped and the loyal Dub fans have been waiting for new material. Now He then dabbled into production where he produced the critically acclaimed first Limpopo Riddim, Lockdown Inity Riddim with Various Artists. Now fresh from the studio, Tribulation and Dub is taking off where Khonani Vhukuma left.

The album consists of 9 tracks that speaks to the trials and tribulation faced by ordinary people on the daily and the Dub that offers a meditative catharsis. In Khonani Vhukuma, which means Real Friends, in Steve’s Native language of TshiVenda, he laments about true friends that are hard to find these days. Everyone is looking to cash in on something from someone. “The Album itself is generally addressing the hardships encountered by people in daily life,” explained Steve.  Take track two for instance, Women and Children, it tackles the agonising problem of Gender Based Violence (GBV) that the country is currently battling with. It is commendable that he addresses the offenders directly, and speaks to them on a Man to Man basis. The tracks that then follow are a heavy deep dub tracks that dubs you down, one can almost feel the vibe in the studio as the tracks were laid down, working with Lufuno Munzhelele on Rythm Guitar, Aubrey Seapose on lead guitar, Khathu Muswa on keyboards, Ndivhuwo Musetha on drums, and himself on bass guitar. Then he brought in the melodic and soothing voice of a lady called Jininka to do the backing vocals, and that gave the entire project that reminiscent feel of the original South African Roots Reggae Music as it should played and heard.

Steve is one of reggae music’s definitive forces of Dub music and he has carved a unique lane within South Africa dense musical sphere, blending dub and reggae with traditional sounds and making TshiVenda seem to be the language perfectly suited for Dub. Even if you don’t know him by name, his works speaks for him. His presence has reverberated across South Africa, for he is one of the very few who is consistent in producing Dub music and that has earned him the title Dub Master.

“I try to push and revive the Deep Roots Reggae and Dub Music that seem to be fading away.” – Steve Netshishivhe
